What to Pack for Umrah: A Simple Checklist
Share
Packing for Umrah is easier with a list. This guide covers the items most travellers take, grouped into five sections: documents, ihram, prayer, toiletries and general travel. Requirements for entry, visas and health rules change, so check the current rules with the official Saudi sources or your travel agent before you book. For questions of worship, such as what is and is not permitted in ihram, ask a qualified scholar.
1. Documents and money
Keep your documents together in one small pouch that stays on you, not in checked luggage.
- Passport. Check the expiry date well before travel. Many countries and airlines require several months of validity remaining.
- Visa or permit. Print a copy and keep a digital copy on your phone.
- Flight and hotel confirmations. Printed and saved offline.
- Travel insurance details. The policy number and the claims contact.
- Vaccination records, if your route or the current rules require them.
- Photocopies of your passport photo page, kept separately from the passport.
- Cards and some cash. Tell your bank you are travelling so your card is not blocked.
- Emergency contacts written on paper, in case your phone battery runs out.
2. Ihram clothing
Men's ihram is two unstitched white sheets: one wrapped around the waist and one over the shoulders. Women wear their ordinary modest clothing. Pack with the timing in mind: many travellers enter ihram before or during the flight, so the ihram should be in your carry-on, not your suitcase.
What to pack for ihram
- Two sets of ihram (men). A spare set is useful if one gets wet or dirty.
- A belt or pouch to hold the lower sheet in place and carry small items.
- Safety pins, if you use them.
- Sandals that are comfortable for long walks on smooth marble floors.
- A light bag to carry your shoes inside the mosque.
Our Hajj Pilgrim Travel Ihram Towel is 100% polyester, 110 × 210 cm (43 × 83 in), and comes in a zip-up carry bag with a clear front panel. It packs flat and dries quickly.
3. Prayer items
You will pray in the Haram, in your hotel and in airports. A few small items make that simpler.
- A portable prayer mat. The Portable Prayer Mat with Zipper & Compass opens to 60 × 100 cm and folds into its own zip case, with a qibla compass set into the case.
- A prayer cap for men. Our White Prayer Cap (Kufi / Taqiyah) is 100% polyester with a firm crown, in sizes 54 to 58 cm. Size is the internal head circumference: measure around the head just above the ears.
- A pocket du'a book or the du'as you want to read, saved offline.
- A tasbih or counter, if you use one.
- A small copy of the Qur'an in a protective case, if you prefer to read from print.
4. Toiletries
Many pilgrims choose unscented toiletries for the time they are in ihram. Pack them in travel sizes that meet your airline's liquid rules.
- Unscented soap. VENTORA Unscented Ihram Soap is a 100 g bar made with no added fragrance.
- Unscented shampoo and deodorant, if you use them.
- Toothbrush and toothpaste, or a miswak.
- Nail clippers and a small comb.
- Sunscreen and lip balm. Check the label if you want unscented products.
- Hand sanitiser and tissues.
- Any regular medicines, in their original packaging, with a copy of the prescription.
- A small first-aid kit: plasters, blister pads and anything your doctor recommends.
5. General travel items
- A refillable water bottle.
- A phone charger and a power bank. Check your airline's rules for power banks in carry-on bags.
- A plug adapter. Saudi Arabia commonly uses the Type G plug (the three-pin type used in the UK). Check your hotel if you are not sure.
- A light, compact umbrella for shade.
- A small backpack or cross-body bag for daily use.
- Comfortable everyday clothing for the days after Umrah.
- A laundry bag to keep used ihram separate.
- A small notebook and pen.
One set for the main items
If you would rather pack the core items in one step, the Hajj & Umrah Essentials Set contains four items that are also sold on their own:

- White prayer cap (kufi / taqiyah), sizes 54 to 58 cm
- Portable prayer mat with qibla compass, 60 × 100 cm open

You choose the cap size and the prayer mat colour when ordering.
Packing tips
Carry-on first
Put your documents, ihram, medicines, a change of clothes and your charger in your carry-on bag. If checked luggage is delayed, you still have what you need to start.
Label everything
Put your name and hotel name on your bags, and a tag inside each bag as well. Many pilgrims carry similar white items and similar luggage.
Pack light
You will walk a great deal, often in crowds. A lighter bag is easier to manage in hotels, lifts and airports.
Leave space
Many travellers bring back dates, Zamzam water or small items for family. Check your airline's rules for Zamzam water before you fly.
